Junior rugby for boys and girls aged 5 to 18

From February to September our winter rugby season sees players braving all elements in the name of the game. Mid-week training sessions ensure our players are fit and prepared to compete in RugbyWA’s junior competitions which is held on a Saturday both at home and away.

2025 Junior Winter Rugby Season Waiting List

We will notify existing members who played for Wanneroo in the winter 2024 season when the priority waiting list is open.

IMPORANT INFORMATION

  1. Completed forms will be allocated to their appropriate age group and will be offered an exclusive period of seven (7) calendar days to complete their registration for the 2025 season.

  2. Only those who join the waiting list will be notified when the Registrar open the exclusive period.

  3. Each Age group will have a stipulated cap on numbers. This takes into consideration the factos including training space, equipment, volunteer resources and the quality of experience for everyone.

  4. Once the exclusive registration period closes, Registrations for 2025 will formally open to non-waitlisted players until the Age Group reaches the stipulated cap or until the registrations close, whichever comes first.

  5. Once registrations are open for the 2025 season, registrations will be on a first in, first served basis so it’s important that if you intend to return to Wanneroo in 2025 and want to secure your spot, you need to please complete the form before the due date

  • U6

    Under 6 Rugby is about developing the basic Rugby skills of five and six year old children. Games will focus on introducing beginner players to the core rugby skills that will set them up for a life in the game. They include: Evasion, Ball Handling, Tag Defence, Scrum and Lineout.

    U6 for 2023 Season:

    Boys & Girls born 2017 & 2018

  • U7

    Participation and fun are the core outcomes for under 7s through games designed to further develop core skills introduced in Under 6. The main skills being evasive running and general ball handling. Two handed tag on shorts remain the tackle rules in U7.

  • U8

    Our under 8s step up to a bigger size pitch. The transition from non-contact rugby in under 8s is managed by the introduction of safe tackling techniques at training. No contact above the shoulders and the importance of timing in tackles are reinforced to ensure safe games.

  • U9

    Our under 9 teams play with 10 players a side on a half size field. Two additional players join the scrum and the line outs for each team, but the scrums and lineouts remain uncontested. The games are played as 2 x 20min halves and no kicking (apart from kick-off) is allowed.

  • U10

    Exciting extensions to the game rules bring under 10 rugby another marker closer to the traditional game rules. Kicking is introduced as well as contests in both the lineouts and scrums. The under 10s play with 12 players a side and can now convert the ball during play.

  • U11

    The under 11 teams play according to the same rules as the under 10 teams, giving them the opportunity to solidify the skills and techniques learnt earlier on. No lifting is allowed in the lineouts and the scrum push is limited to 1 meter to ensure age appropriate player safety.

  • U12

    The full field is now our oyster as the under 12s master the game in two 25 minute halves with a full 15 man side. Seven players join the contested lineout (no lifting), and eight players go down in the scrum (1m push limit). The scrum half has all options around the scrum.

  • U13

    Traditional rugby rules apply with lifting in lineouts introduced in under 13 rugby. Competition ladders, final series and Premiership give these teams something tangible to work towards whilst coaches are diligently reinforcing safe tackling and scrum techniques.

  • U14 Boys

    We offer girls only team in addition to our boys teams in this age category.

  • U15 Girls

    Girls Club offer girls only teams in this age group.

    Our U18 girls form part of our Senior Women playing squad with options to play Women’s 10s or XV.

Developing women’s rugby in WA

Our club have one of the most successful women teams in Western Australia and we are proud with the consistent growth of female participation at the club. Modified rules apply to junior rugby to ensure the games are safe and age appropriate. Modified rules also allow players to build the skills and techniques needed to keep them safe on the field. You can find the Rugby AU law book via the links below.
